As of January 1, 2009, the town has an estimated population of 9,219 and a density of 124 persons per km². The total area is 74.25 km². There is one convenience store, four gas stations, a park, a boat pier, a hospital, 5 clinics, 2 dentists, many restaurants and two banks. There are 4 elementary schools and 2 junior high schools. Located at the intersection of Routes 34 and 205, on the edge of Ōmura Bay, Higashisonogi has a convenient access to trains, buses, highway and has a port as well. The industry in the town includes construction, lumber, stone/rock forming, various agriculture and most famously, Japanese green tea. ==History== Historical records date back to before the 16th century.
